In Your Neighborhood is an installation and performance that tracks one year's worth of living in a small, quirky and heavily diverse city of Hamtramck, MI. Surrounded almost completely by Detroit, Hamtramck is one of the only places in Southeast Michigan that has a steadily increasing population of newcomers. Some of these newcomers are artists, musicians, students, but most are new immigrants to the United States. More than 25 languages are spoken here.
In Your Neighborhood is an attempt to create a visual and audio representation of my experience here. I have been studying and observing this city and it unique population for the past two years. I have collected sounds and images and listened to people talk about who they are and their experiences here. It was during this time that I realized this piece. I’m pleased to have the opportunity to install it at street level in the Public Pool Art Space on Caniff Street. This unique storefront has also become part of my work and given me an opportunity to further interact, observe and connect with the community.
